History and Inception of Handcrafted Clothing in Odisha

Odisha is famous for its world-famous handcrafted textiles and clothing produced by skillful handloom weavers. Sambalpuri is one of the many traditional crafts processed in large amounts in western parts of Odisha for ages.

Sambalpuri crafts have their origin in the tribal belt of Sambalpur, Odisha, and reflect an ancient handicraft called Bandhakala. The rural artisan communities still refer to the Sambalpuri ikat as Bandha. They use a tie-dye technique to create the Bandha fabric. The fabric cannot get bleached to another color once it gets dyed.

Traditionally, Bandhas were created with images like flora, fauna, or geometrical patterns. Gradually, it has evolved by using portrait, landscape, and flower pod patterns.

Sambalpuri crafts get styled into saris, dresses, kurtas, stoles, jackets, business casuals, etc., because of their versatility, thick texture, and attractive patterns. The attire is crafted from the Sambalpuri material and is suitable for all weather conditions because of its cotton base and deep color.
